3 Reasons why you should replace your old air conditioner

An aging air-conditioning unit can still look as good as the day you bought it (on the outside), but the older they are, the more problems that may be waiting inside. Choosing to replace your old system can be a hard decision to make, and not one to make lightly. Factors such as cost and time constraints often mean people hold off, but the benefits far outweigh the negatives. If you’re deliberating this decision at the moment, here are three reasons to give you a little nudge.

1. It can save you money

Older systems use more energy to run, and depending how often you use it, the dollars could be adding up, quickly. There are several reasons your old system may cost more to run, including lack of maintenance (which is why it’s important to clean out your unit regularly), worn or damaged filters, or simply that it’s not as energy efficient as newer models. As of 2004, residential air conditioner systems must meet Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS). Meaning, many old air conditioners are 30-40% less efficient than today’s modern systems. So consider what you’ll save in the long run if you upgrade.

2. It can warm your home faster in winter and cool your home faster in summer

When it’s not burning a hole in your wallet, your old system might also not be running properly. A sign that the unit is not working as well as it should is that it doesn’t keep you cool like it did before – or worse, it’s breaking down when you need it most. Without correct seasonal maintenance, old systems are not only inefficient, they’re breeding grounds for mold spores and bacteria.

3. It can more environmentally friendly

In the same way that an old air conditioner could be costing you more, the impact on the environment is also something to be aware of. Older units use more energy and that energy transfers into greenhouse gas emissions.
