Charge Up For The Electrical Vehicle
While sales of electric vehicles, or “EVs”, in Australia aren’t quite at the level of other countries, they’re growing fast. In fact, a State of Electric Vehicles Report (PDF) from August 2021 showed:
- 8,688 EVs were sold in the first half of 2021. This equates to 2% of the total vehicle market – still a way off the global average of 4%.
- There are 31 EV models for sale in Australia with largest segment being SUVs. And they’re not as expensive as you may think – with 14 EV models priced under $65,000.
- There will be 58 EV models (all the major brands) for sale in Australia by the end of 2022.
By comparison, about 75% of all vehicles sold in Norway in 2020 were electric. Plenty of room for growth!
In NSW, the Government has introduced the Electric Vehicle Strategy, backed by $500m of investment to accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles. That means more demand for EV charging stations.
But where to turn and what are your options when it comes to EV installation? Read on to find out.
Why install an EV charging station?
As touched on, electric vehicles are becoming more commonplace in Australia – especially for those living in a major metropolitan area such as Sydney or Melbourne. So even if you’re not quite ready to get an EV in the short-term, having an EV charger installed makes sense to future-proof your home and lifestyle.
An EV charger can make a great investment and even increase the value of your property come time to sell. If you’re building your dream home and thinking about installation of an EV charger station, reach out to an electrical design expert, such as Vaccaro.

Thinking about getting an electric vehicle? What you need to know
When it comes to charging your EV, if you plug it into a standard power point in your home, you’ll be pulling power from the same source as the rest of your electronics. And since your EV must compete for power with the other devices in your home, charging times will be reduced.
Not only that, power supply to the rest of your home will be disrupted. And charging this way can be very expensive too, especially if you need to charge your car daily. All that money you’re saving on petrol you’ll be giving back in the form of higher electricity bills.
For a more energy efficient solution, and to get the fastest charging speeds, you’ll need to have a dedicated charging station for your EV. When you install an EV charging station, you’ll have a dedicated power circuit just for your car. By concentrating the electricity on a single output, you’ll get the fastest charging times possible from your home – without putting a strain on the rest of your electrical supply.
